5. From Tucson, Arizona, United States of America

“I was raised in Tucson, Arizona in the United States. I still sometimes dream of driving in the forest of the desert cactus, which is famous for being as the world’s largest saguaro cactus. Saguaro cactus is often seen in American western movies. The Saguaro Cactus is a tall cactus (which grows up to about 10 meters high, some of them) and is attached to a pillar-like stem with arms sticking out, making it look like people doing 만세!(‘Mansae!’) and is one of the most famous things in Tucson.”

Asked by the reporter about his hometown he recalled and Professor Levine looks at Palgongsan Mountain far outside through the window.

 

 

―You have been in Korea since 2012, what has been your overall experience of living here?

▶I have been really lucky that since coming to South Korea people, and especially artists and poets, have welcomed me into their community and accepted me as a member. I think Koreans can be really accommodating to foreigners. And when foreigners take the time to learn the Korean language and respect the Korean culture, people here are really appreciative. So I have had mostly good experiences. Except for the air pollution (미세먼지), I really love living in South Korea.

―Finally, do you have any other words for our Korean readers?

▶Recently, Korean culture is spreading around the world under the name of 한류(Hallyu; Korean Wave), but it is regrettable that many classical and representative works of literature are not known to the international community yet. Translation of Korean literary works are very important. I promise to continue translation activities so that Korean literature works can play role with 한류(the Korean Wave).

This is Professor Levine's promise to Daegu citizens.

―Thank you for your long interview. I wish you have a happy day while living in Korea.

미국의 애리조나(Arizona) 주 투손(Tucson) 시에서

“저는 미국의 애리조나 주 투손 시에서 자랐습니다. 세계에서 가장 큰 사와로(saguaro)선인장으로 유명한 사막 속, 사와로 선인장의 숲속으로 드라이브하는 꿈을 지금도 가끔 꾸고 있습니다. 사와로 선인장은 미국서부 영화에서 자주 등장합니다. 사와로 선인장은 키가 큰 선인장(10m까지도 자람)인데 기둥 같은 줄기에 두 개의 가지가 벌린 팔과 같이 붙어 있어서 사람들이 ‘만세!’ 를 하는 것과 같은 모습이고 투손 시의 명물 중의 하나입니다.”

고향을 묻는 질문에 레빈 교수는 창밖의 멀리 팔공산을 바라보며 고향생각에 잠긴다.

 

 

―2012년부터 한국에 계셨는데 특히 한국에서 생활하며 얻은 한국인들에 대한 느낌은 무엇인가요?

▶한국 사람들, 특히 예술가들과 시인들은 저를 그들의 공동체로 환영하고 저를 회원으로 받아들인 것은 정말 행운이었습니다. 제 생각에 한국인들은 외국인들을 정말로 잘 받아주는 것 같아요. 그리고 한국어를 배우고 한국 문화를 존중하는 외국인을 이곳 사람들은 진정으로 환영한다고 생각합니다. 그래서 저는 좋은 경험을 많이 했다고 생각됩니다. 단지 대기오염 (미세먼지)을 제외하고 말입니다. 저는 한국에서 한국인들 속에서 살아가는 것을 정말로 자랑스럽게 생각합니다.

―마지막으로 한국 독자들을 위하여 한 말씀 부탁드립니다.

▶최근에 한류라는 이름으로 한국 문화가 세계로 퍼져가고 있습니다. 그러나 아직까지 많은 고전과 대표적인 문학 작품들이 국제사회에 알려지지 않은 것이 안타깝습니다. 한국 문학작품들의 번역이 대단히 중요합니다. 한국 문학작품들이 지금 세계로 펼쳐지는 한류와 함께 그 역할을 다 할 수 있도록 번역 활동을 계속할 것을 약속드립니다. 많이 도와주십시오.
