학창 시절

2003년에 애리조나(Arizona) 대학교에 입학하여 문학과 문예창작학을 복수 전공하였다.

2008년 시 부문에서 애리조나 대학이 주는 해티 로켓 어워드(Hattie Locket Award)를 시 부문에서 받았고 문학부문에서 잭 허긴스 어워드(Jack Huggins Award)를 수상하여 대학생 때부터 문학에 특히 시에 재능을 보였다.

2008년, 풀브라이트 장학금(Fulbright Scholarship)을 받고, 발트 3국 중 하나인 리투아니아에서 발트 문학과 문화에 대한 그의 지식을 넓힐 기회를 가졌다.

2009년, 애리조나 대학원에 진학하여 시 문학 연구와 시 창작 활동을 열심히 하는 그에게 이 대학의 시 문학 재단(The University’s Poetry Literature Foundation)에서 시상하는 에이 더블유 피 인트로 어워드(AWP Intro Award, Poetry)를 시 부문에서 받았다. 이로서 그는 이미 시인으로 데뷔했고 벌써 유명한 시인이 되었다.

2009∼2010년 애리조나 대학원 학생 신분으로 애리조나 대학원 학생들에게 강의를 하였고 훌륭한 교수에게 시상하는 자니 레이 하프 티칭 어워드(Johnnie Raye Harper Teaching Award)를 수상한 특별한 학생이었다.

2009∼2010년 대학원 학생신분으로 빌니어스(Vilnius) 시에 있는 빌니어스 대학에 강의를 요청 받아 풀브라이트 장학금을 받고 현대 미국 시와 시 창작을 지도하였다.

 

한국에서 학술연구와 교수학습 지도

“저는 2012년에 서울에 있는 세종대학교 영문학과 조교수로 임용되어 한국에 오게 되었습니다. 그 후 저는 한국어를 체계적으로 배우고 싶어서 세종대학에서 연세대학교 언더우드 국제대학(Underwood International College)으로 옮겼습니다.”

어떻게 한국에 오게 되었는가 묻는 질문에 이렇게 말했다.

2012년에 서울에 있는 세종대학교 문예창작학과 조교수로 발령을 받아 2년간 미국 문화와 미국 문학을 가르쳤다.

2013∼2016년 연세대학교 강사로 있으면서 문예창작학과 학부생들에게 시 작법을 가르쳤고 대학원생들에게 번역과 실습을 맡아 지도하였다. 연세대학교 언더우드 국제대학에 한국어를 체계적으로 배우기 위하여 등록하였다. 그리고 틈틈이 국제적인 학생들의 활동행사를 조율하고 지도하였다.

2013년부터 3년간 국제교육을 위한 국립교육원이 주관하는 한국 정부 장학금을 받아서 한국어 공부와 영문학 강의를 하였다.

School Days

In 2003 Jake Levine entered the University of Arizona and a double majored in English literature and creative writing.

In 2008, he received the Hattie Locket Award from the University of Arizona in the Poetry category, and was awarded the Jack Huggins Award in the Literature category, showing his talent in literature, especially poetry, since he was a college student.

In 2008, he received a Fulbright Scholarship and had the opportunity to expand his knowledge of Baltic culture at Lithuania, one of the three Baltic countries.

In 2009, he received the AWP Intro Award (Poetry) from the University's Poetry Literature Foundation for his poetry researches and poetry writings at the graduate school in Arizona. As a result, he already made his debut as a poet and became a famous poet.

From 2009 to 2010, he was a graduate student at the Arizona Graduate School, where he taught and was awarded the Johnny Raye Harper Teaching Award.

Between 2010 and 2011, he was asked to teach at Vilnius University as A Fulbright Scholarship student.

 

Academic Research and Teaching an English teacher in Korea

“I came to Korea In 2012, because I got hired at Sejong University to be an English teacher. Then I started learning Korean and moved from Sejong to Yonsei University, in the Underwood International College.”

How did you come to Korea? When was asked by the reporter, he said,

In 2012, he was appointed as an assistant professor of literature and creative writing at Sejong University. He taught American culture and American literature for two years.

From 2013 to 2016, as a lecturer at Yonsei University, he taught writing poetry at the Department of Literature and Creative Writing, and taught graduate students in translation and practice. He also coordinated and guided international student activities in his spare time.

In 2013, he received a scholarship from the Korean government organized by the National Institute of Education for International Education for three years.
