한국인보다 더 한국문학을 사랑하는 미국인 Jake Levine, 계명대학교 교수

한국인보다 더 한국문학을 사랑하는 미국인 제이크 레빈(Jake Levine, 35), 그는 김수영 시인의 시 ‘달나라 장난’을 가장 좋아하고 소설가는 김동리 작가와 편혜영 작가 그리고 오정희 작가를 좋아한다. 2020년, 김이듬 시인의 시 ‘히스테리아(Hysteria)’를 공동 번역하여 미국문학번역가협회(ALTA)가 주관하는 전미번역상을 수상하였다. 세계적으로 유명한 전미번역상의 수상은 우리나라에서 처음 있는 일이고 아시아에서도 처음이다. 동시에 루시엔 스트릭 번역상도 우리나라와 아시아에서 처음으로 수상하여 또 한 번 한국문학을 세계 여론의 중심에 세웠다. 2003년, 애리조나 대학교에 입학하여 영어 영문학과 문예창작학을 복수 전공한 그는 대학생시절 애리조나 대학이 주는 Hattie Locket Award를 시 부분에서 받았고 문학부문에서 Jack Huggins Award를 수상한 수재였다. 2009년, 애리조나 대학원에 진학하여 시 문학 연구와 시 창작 활동을 열심히 하는 그에게 이 대학의 시 문학 재단에서 시상하는 AWP Intro Award를 시 부문에서 수상하여 학창시절에 이미 유명한 시인으로, 특별한 학생으로 통했던 계명대학교 Artech College 문예창작학과 제이크 레빈 교수를 그의 연구실에서 만났다.

 

An American who Loves Korean Literature

Jake Levine(35), an American who loved Korean literature so much, liked poet Kim Soo-young’s poem 달나라 장난(The Moon Land Prank) the most. After reading Kim Dong-ri’s 무녀도(Shaman) and 까치소리(The Magpie’s Sound), he was deeply impressed and his heart leaped up a lot. In 2020, he also co-translated poet Kim Yi-Deum’s poem ‘Hysteria’ and won the National Translation Award which was organized by the American Literature Translators Association(ALTA). Winning of the world-famous National American Translation Award was introduced Korean literature to the world through an amazing event which was the first in Korea and the first in Asia. At the same time, he won the Lucien Stryk Translation Prize which was the first in Korea and the first in Asia too, make standing Korean literature at the center of global public opinion of the world once again. In 2003, he received two kind of awards from the University of Arizona in the Poetry category and the Literature category, showing his talent in literature, especially poetry, since he was a college student. At the graduate school, he won the AWP Intro Award for his poetry researches and poetry writings. As a result, he already made his debut as a poet and became a famous poet. As such, reporter met Jake Levine, a professor of Keimyung University, at his laboratory.

 

한국문학 사랑에 빠지다

“제가 가장 좋아하는 소설가는 김동리이고 소설은 ‘무녀도’이며 단편소설은 ‘까치소리’입니다. 저는 ‘무녀도’와 ‘까치소리’를 다 읽고 큰 감명을 받아 한참을 멍하니 서 있었고 가슴이 뛰었습니다. 여류 소설가의 작품은 편혜영 작가의 ‘홀’이고 오정희 작가의 ‘중국인 거리’도 제가 좋아하는 소설입니다.” 가장 좋아하는 한국의 소설가와 소설이 누구인가 묻는 말에 대한 레빈 교수의 대답이다.

－가장 좋아 하는 한국의 시인은 누구입니까? 그리고 시는?

▶제가 가장 좋아하는 한국 시인은 장옥관 시인입니다. 왜냐하면 그는 제가 가장 좋아하는 친구이기 때문입니다. 제가 가장 좋아하는 한국 시는 김수영 시인의 ‘달나라의 장난’입니다. 김수영 시인은 역대 시인 중 가장 위대한 시인 중 한 명이라고 저는 생각합니다.

레빈 교수는 한국 현대시를 좋아하기 때문에 한국의 현대시를 계속해서 번역하고 싶다고 한다. 그래서 그는 계속해서 번역하고 싶은 시인과 책을 찾고 있다. 또 대구미술관에서 브로슈어 번역과 작품의 해설번역을 하기도 한다. 그가 흥미 있는 것은 무엇이든 하면서 뛰어다니는 것을 좋아하기 때문에 다른 여러 곳에서 번역을 하기도 한다. 하지만 지금은 미술과 미술 비평의 역사에 관련된 많은 글들을 번역하고 있다.          ※ 2편에 계속됩니다.

 

Fall in love with Korean literature

“My favorite novelist is 김동리(Kim Dong-ri). My favorite novel is 무녀도(shaman) and short story is 까치소리(The Magpie’s Sound). After reading Kim Dong-ri’s 무녀도(shaman) and 까치소리(The Magpie’s Sound), I was deeply impressed and my heart leaped up a lot. My favorite Female novelists and works are 홀(Hole) by the author of 편해영(Pyeon Hae-young) and 중국인 거리(China Street) by the author of 오정희(Oh Jung-hee).” Professor Levin’s answer to the question of who is his favorite Korean novelist and novel.

－Who is your favorite Korean poet and poem?

▶My favorite Korean poet is 장옥관(Jang Ok-Gowan). Because he is my favorite friend. My favorite Korean poem is 달나라의 장난(Moonlight Pranks) by 김수영(Kim Su-Yung). 김수영 is one of the greatest poets of all time.

Because of loving contemporary Korean poetry he continues to translate Korean poetry. Also he translates for the Daegu Museum of Art and do a lot of translations for other things. He likes to jump around and just does whatever interests him at the time. So he hopes he will find poets and books he keeps wanting to translate. But right now I am translating a lot of texts related to art and history of art criticism.          ※ This article will continue in the next issue 2
